This course is aimed at experienced gas operatives who wish to carry out tightness testing and direct purging of commercial installation pipework where the volume does not exceed 1 m³.
It covers the skills and knowledge that aim to support safe and compliant working practices, including leak-testing and purging procedures, prior to commissioning or re-commissioning natural gas installations operating at pressures up to 40mbar and pipe diameters up to 150 mm.
The TPCP1A Testing & Purging (<1m³ in Volume) course is for experienced operatives who wish to undertake more varied work in the commercial sector.
This module is normally undertaken as part of either the Commercial Changeover Gas Safety Package or the Core Commercial Gas Safety Package.
Training is not a mandatory pre-requisite to assessment.
The course includes training and assessment on the following:
- TPCP1A scope, limitations, and application
- Tightness testing (soundness testing) of installation pipework
- Direct purging of installation pipework volume limits (not exceeding 1 m³)
- Operating pressure (up to 40 mbar)
- Pipework diameter (up to 150 mm)
- Natural gas installations only
The course is aimed at experienced gas operatives who wish to carry out tightness testing and direct purging of natural gas installation pipework in smaller commercial settings. It is particularly suitable for delegates who are working on, or moving into, commercial installations with pipework volumes not exceeding 1 m³ in volume.
Entry Requirements
Delegates must already hold one of the following core or changeover gas safety qualifications:
- COCN1 – Core Commercial Gas Safety qualification
- CODNCO1 – Changeover Domestic to Commercial Gas Safety
- Core Catering, Laundry, Metering, LPG or Domestic
On successful completion, delegates receive certification in TPCP1A, valid for 5 years.
As with other ACS gas safety modules, certification requires periodic renewal to remain valid.

About the Course
Q1. What is TPCP1A Testing & Purging (<1m³) course?
This course is aimed at experienced gas operatives who need to undertake tightness testing and direct purging of natural gas installation pipework not exceeding 1m³, up to 40 mbar and 150mm diameter.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Q2. How long is the course?
The course runs for 2 days, combining classroom-theory with practical hands-on training/assessment.
__________________________________________________________________________
Q3. What will delegates do during the course?
The course covers tightness testing and direct purging of smaller commercial natural gas pipework, including scope limits, safety considerations, and procedures aligned with ACS requirements.
__________________________________________________________________________
Q4. How is TPCP1A different from TPCP1?
TPCP1A is for smaller commercial natural gas installations with pipework up to 1M, 40mbar and 150mm diameter. TPCP1 covers larger installations, higher pressures and includes LPG. Completing this course does not automatically allow work on TPCP1 systems.
Key Differences:
TPCP1A
- Pipework: up to 1 m³, 40mbar, 150mm diameter (natural gas only)
- Installations: smaller commercial sites
- Assessment duration: 1.5 days
- Progression: does not automatically qualify you for TPCP1
TPCP1
- Pipework: over 1 m³, up to 16bar (natural gas) or 2bar (LPG)
- Installations: larger commercial sites
- Assessment duration: 2 days
- Progression: TPCP1 holders can work on TPCP1A systems
You can explore the TPCP1 Testing & Purging (>1m³) course for more information.
