While Mental Health First Aiders are trained to support colleagues experiencing a mental health crisis, Mental Health Advocates focus on promoting positive mental wellbeing, encouraging early conversations and helping to create a supportive workplace culture.
The course aims to help delegates:
- Recognise the common signs and symptoms of poor mental health
- Encourage supportive conversations and promote early intervention where appropriate
- Help reduce stigma around mental health in the workplace
- Support the development of a positive, inclusive, and supportive workplace culture
- Understand the role of a Mental Health Advocate, including when and how to signpost colleagues to appropriate professional support.
By the end of the course, delegates should have a greater understanding of how to promote positive mental wellbeing and encourage colleagues to access appropriate support when needed.

No previous mental health training is required.
Course Entry Requirements
To attend this course, delegates must:
- Be aged 18 or over (16-17 year olds may attend with consent from a parent/guardian)
- Have a suitable level of written and spoken English to take part in the course and complete activites (equivalent to Level 2)
Important information:
The course covers sensitive topics, including suicide and self-harm. Delegates are encouraged to consider this before attending and may take a break from the session if they need to.
Delegates who successfully complete the course will receive a St John Ambulance Certificate of attendance, which is valid for three years.
Assessment:
Throughout the course, trainers will observe delegates' participation and engagement with the activities. Delegates will be encouraged to demonstrate their understanding of the topics covered.

How the Training Works

Training combines trainer-led sessions, group discussions and practical activities to help delegates explore mental health awareness and supportive communication.

Lunch is not provided so delegates are advised to bring their own lunch or make use of nearby facilities. Training centres are equipped with a kettle, microwave and fridge if needed.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for the course. If your training is taking place at one of our live operational venues, personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required. Full details will be provided once your booking is confirmed.
