The course aims to provide delegates with the knowledge and skills required to plan and manage lifting operations as an Appointed Person.
The course combines classroom-based theory with practical, hands-on training to develop the knowledge and understanding required to fulfill the responsibilities of an Appointed Person on site.
While the course can be undertaken by those new to the role, it is recommended that delegates have an understanding of lifting operations and relevant site experience.

- Codes of practice BS7121 part 1 and BS712 part 3
- Roles and responsibilities of personnel involved with lifting operations
- Crane appreciation crane types, capabilities and limitations
- Duty charts
- Crane terminology
- Site access and egress
- Documentation and certification for lifting equipment and lifting accessories
- Crane stability/ground conditions
- Rated Capacity Indicators (RCI’s) and Safe Working Loads (SWL)
- Selection of lifting accessories
- Types of accessories and use
- Mode factors for accessories
- Down rating of accessories
- Sling angles
- Communications
- Planning a lifting operation
- Writing a risk assessment (End test)
- Writing a method statement (End test)

Experienced Worker Test – 1 day testing

Prerequisites
A good understanding of spoken and written English.
Traditional NPORS card
For those looking to obtain a traditional NPORS Card:
- Novice: No formal prerequisites. However, an understanding of lifting operations and relevant site experience is recommended.
- Experienced Worker: Those with either 18 months' provable work experience and/or 6 months' consistent daily experience in the category will be eligible for the Experienced Worker Test (EWT)
Successful completion of the EWT allows eligible experienced workers to proceed to the NPORS theory and practical assessments required for certification, without completing the full training course. NPORS / CSCS Card
If you are applying for an NPORS/CSCS Card, you must also hold an in-date relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Touchscreen Test.
The CITB HS&E Touchscreen Test is only required for delegates who wish to obtain an NPORS/CSCS Card. It is not a requirement for delegates seeking a traditional NPORS card.

Traditional NPORS Card – Refresher training is advised every 3 years.
Upon successful completion of this course, delegates applying for NPORS/CSCS Card will be awarded a NPORS Red Trained Operators Card valid for 2 years. During this time delegates will be required to register for a relevant NVQ. Upon successfully completing of the NVQ, delegates will be awarded a Competent Operators Card valid for 5 years. A CPD record / operator logbook will also be issued which will need to be kept up to date.
