This course covers what managers need to know for safe and effective use of MEWPs on site; including planning the job, conducting a risk assessment, selecting the right equipment for optimum cost-efficiency and mitigating all possible risks.

About IPAF 

Q1. My site has told me I need IPAF Training. What does this mean? 
IPAF stands for the International Powered Access Federation. It sets training standards, provides accredited courses and aims to help improve health, safety and skills across sectors such as construction or maintenance that use powered access equipment. If your site or employer requires IPAF training, it means you'll be operating mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and need the correct IPAF qualification to use this equipment safely and legally.

Q2. Is this course accredited?
Yes, the IPAF MEWPs for managers e-learning course is fully accredited by IPAF and delivered by HSS Training, an approved IPAF training provider.

About the Course 

Q3. What does the MEWPs for Managers e-learning course cover?
The course covers legal duties, risk assessment, planning and supervising MEWP use, understanding hazards, managing operator compliance and site safety.

Q4. What do the different IPAF categories mean?
Each machine type is given an IPAF category based on whether it’s static or mobile and how it moves. 
  • The 3A category covers mobile vertical lifts (scissor lifts), which move straight up and down. 
  • The 3B category covers mobile boom lifts (cherry pickers), which can extend both up and out for greater reach. 
  • The 1B category covers static boom lifts, which have a fixed base and extend up and out. 
Understanding the categories helps managers assign the right equipment and ensure safe use on site.

Q5. How long does the course take to complete?
The IPAF MEWPs for Managers e-learning course is self-paced online learning that takes approximately 7 hours, however you can pause and resume at your own pace. The e-learning module must be completed within 6 months of your booking.

Who Should Attend 

Q6. Who is this course for? 
The course is aimed at project managers, foreman and supervisors in industries such as construction, facilities management, retail, airports, and arboriculture who oversee powered access equipment including scissor lifts, boom lifts and other aerial work platforms.  It's ideal for delegates who want to complete their IPAF MEWPs for Managers course at their own pace.

Q7. Are there any entry requirements?
Delegates must be at least 16 years old, in good physical health and fitness with no serious issues related to vision, hearing, heart conditions or a severe fear of heights/vertigo. Delegates must also have a good understanding of spoken and written English. For additional support, please see question 13.

How the Training Works 

Q8. What should I prepare for the e-learning course?
You'll need an internet-connected device such as a smartphone, laptop or computer that supports IPAF e-learning, you can check compatibility here before you begin. We also recommend downloading the IPAF ePAL App as your IPAF ID from the app is needed to complete your course registration. If you have any concerns about your device requirements, please call us prior to your course start date on 0345 605 0006.

Q9. How does e-learning work?
This self-paced e-learning course lets you study at a time and place that suits you. Unlike remote instructor-led sessions, you can focus on specific areas, study in sections and access content securely via facial recognition.

Q10. How do I access the e-learning module? 
The link to join the e-learning course will come from noreply@ipaf.org and we recommend adding this to your list of safe senders or checking your junk/spam folder.

Assessments & Certification 

Q11. How is the course assessed? 
The course concludes with an online theory test that must be passed to gain your certification.

Q12. What certification will I receive? 
Successful delegates will receive a digital IPAF certificate confirming your managerial compliance.  You can also upgrade to purchase a phyiscal printed IPAF certificate. The MEWPs for Managers qualification is only eligible for a certificate only. If you already hold a valid PAL card for other qualifications, then you may have MM category added to your card.

For the IPAF operator courses only, theory test papers are available in 30+ languages, including Albanian, Bulgarian, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English (UK), English (US), Estonian, Finnish, French, Georgian, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and Ukrainian. 

You may be able to bring an impartial, approved translator, depending on the course and awarding body. Please let us know as early as possible on 0345 605 0006 so we can confirm what’s allowed, discuss any fees and ensure the right support is in place.

Course concludes with an online theory test that delegates must pass to attain the IPAF MM qualification. Upon successful completion, delegates will receive an IPAF certificate.

Please note: This course includes a certificate only – a PAL card is not issued.

Those who hold a valid Powered Access Licence can have the MEWPS for Managers (MM) category added to their PAL Card.

Facial Recognition

This e-learning course uses facial recognition to ensure that the delegate receiving the qualification is the same delegate doing the course and answering the questions. This means that busy managers and supervisors don't need to take time away from their job to go to a training centre to undertake testing.

Initially four photographs will be taken using the delegate's devices webcam / front facing camera - with the delegate looking left, right, up and down. Every so often the camera will re-verify the same person is completing the course, and if not the training will cease. This same re-verification will happen for every question in the exam.

At the end a picture will be taken that the delegate can pose for - this will be embedded in their pass receipt and used to input into the IPAF Admin system when processing the IPAF course.
