    The course aims to help delegates:
    • Develop awareness of the risks associated with underground utilities and excavation practices

    The combined EUSR course brings together both Category 1 - Locate Utility Services (HSG47) and Category 2 - Implement Safe Excavating Practices. It includes a mix of theory and practical activities designed to support safe working around underground services and excavation tasks, using recognised industry methods and relevant HSE guidance.

    Topics covered include:
    • How to interpret utility plan drawings, symbols, and coded information
    • The safe use of location equipment to detect a range of underground services
    • The hazards associated with underground services and how to mitigate risks
    • Effective site marking and preparation before excavation
    • Safe digging techniques using both hand tools and hand-held power tools

    EUSR stands for Energy & Utility Skills Register. It is a UK register used across industries including water, gas, energy, and waste management to record training and recognised qualifications.

    Yes. This is an EUSR accredited course covering both Category 1 and 2, delivered by HSS Training, an approved EUSR training provider.

    No. An EUSR card and a CSCS card are different schemes. CSCS generally relates to the construction sector, while EUSR applies to utilities and infrastructure related training and qualifications.

    This course is designed to support delegates working around underground services. It covers locating utility services, identifying risks and applying safe excavation practices using recognised methods and HSG47 guidance.

    HSG47 is Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance called 'Avoiding Danger from Underground Services'. It provides guidance on planning work, locating underground services and carrying out excavation activities safely around buried utilities such as gas, electricity and water networks.

    Who Should Attend 

    Q6. Who is this course for? 
    This course is aimed at delegates involved in locating underground services or carrying out excavation work. This may include managers, supervisors, safety professionals, groundworkers and site operatives.

    There are no formal entry requirements. However, delegates should have a suitable understanding of spoken and written English and be physically able to take part in practical activities.     Q8. Do I need previous utility locating experience? 
    No previous experience is required. The course is suitable for both new and experienced delegates involved in excavation or underground utility work.

    How the Training Works 

    Q9. Is the course classroom-based or practical? 
    Training includes both theory and practical activities. Delegates take part in classroom learning alongside practical exercises linked to utility location and safe excavation methods. 
    ___________________________________________________________________

    Q10. Is lunch provided during the course?
    Lunch is not provided so delegates are advised to bring their own lunch or make use of nearby facilities. Training centres are equipped with a kettle, microwave and fridge if needed.

    Q11. What should I bring on the day? 
    PPE will be required for practical activities and will include a helmet, safety boots, hi-vis vest or jacket, hard hat, safety gloves, eye protection, long sleeve top and full-length trousers.     Assessments & Certification 

    Q13. How is the course assessed? 
    Delegates complete theoretical assessment for both Category 1 and Category 2. Each assessment contains 25 multiple-choice questions and requires an 80% pass mark.
    __________________________________________________________________________

    Q14. What certification will I receive? 
    Successful delegates will receive an EUSR registration and an ESUR photo ID card showing the qualification achieved. The registration is valid for 3 years, after which refresher training is required to maintain the qualification.
