The BOHS P402 course is designed to provide the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to survey buildings for asbestos.
The course aims to develop your understanding of:
- How asbestos has been used in buildings
- How to identify and safely sample asbestos containing materials
- The different types of asbestos survey and their requirements
The course is also intended to give you the knowledge and practical ability to make appropriate recommendations for managing asbestos and helping to minimise the risk of exposure.

- Understanding the different survey types and their requirements
- Carrying out material assessments
- Understanding and utilising all safety controls during surveys and sampling
- Providing accurate and comprehensive survey reports
Course Assessment
- Practical assessment
- Two written exams
The practical assessment and two written exames must be passed within 12 months.
This course is intended for:
- Asbestos surveyors and managers of asbestos surveying teams
- Asbestos re-inspectors and anyone responsible for carrying out asbestos re-inspections
- Those who need a detailed understanding of asbestos surverying principles, including asbestos report writers, architects and building surveyors
Course Entry Requirements
Before attending the course, you're expected to have:
- An awareness of the content of HSG264 Asbestos: The Survey Guide (January 2010)
- At least six month's previous experience assisting with asbestos surveys
- Previous training covering the relevant core competences outlined in Table A9.1 of HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts' Guide (2nd edition, July 2021). This may be gained through in-house learning or by completing the BOHS P400 foundation module.
