Product number: IPAF_ELEARN_OP

This industry leading IPAF e-learning module provides delegates with a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the MEWPs they work with.

IPAF's enhanced e-learning module is part of its full training programme for mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). The training has been created to allow delegates to gain and develop the required knowledge outside of the classroom.

Completing the e-learning alone does not qualify you as an operator; industry standards require both the knowledge gained in the e-learning theory session and assessed operation of the equipment to demonstrate proficiency. Once you have completed the e-learning, you must also complete the practical assessment and testing at one of our HSS Training IPAF-Approved centres to obtain a PAL Card (Powered Access Licensed-Registration).

To check that your device will support the IPAF E-learning please click here.

To take advantage of this, please follow the below steps:

  1. Get in touch with us on 0345 605 0006 or click below to book - at this time you will be charged the full course cost.
  2. Complete the theory e-learning module which can be done anytime, anywhere and on any device, at a pace which suits the individual delegate.
(Compatible with PCs, Macs, tablets and smartphones on any modern internet browser)
  3. Once you have completed the e-learning and successfully passed, please contact us again to book your practical training at one of our IPAF-approved centres - to do this you will need your unique reference number which will be shown on your ‘receipt of completion’ generated at the end of your e-learning.
Delegates are required to attend an HSS Training IPAF-approved training centre within 90 days of completing the e-learning module to sit their theory exam and undertake practical training and assessment (Due to Covid-19 this has been temporarily increased this to 90 days).
  4. You will need to bring a copy of your ‘receipt of completion’ to the course for the trainer to verify, without this you will be refused entry.
  5. Upon entry to the course, you will be asked to complete an open book multiple choice questionnaire which is based on the knowledge gained from the e-learning, this will be followed by a practical training and assessment session lasting a minimum of 4 hours, however this is dependent upon knowledge and experience of using MEWPs.
  • Please note: Both the e-learning and practical modules must be completed within 6 months of the date of booking

To find the next available date at a centre near you, please contact us on 0345 605 0006 or email training@hss.com.

This attracts a CITB Short Course Duration Grant at Tier 2, with a value of £140. Please see the Grants and Funding tab for further information.

This course is also available as a full-day tutor led IPAF (Dual) Operator course, please click here.

The e-learning module is highly interactive, with a wide variety of stimulating training methods including games, quizzes, videos and simulations - ensuring delegates gain all of the required knowledge to safely operate a MEWP.

The module is broken down into 7 study areas, and delegates understanding will be checked throughout with quizzes at the end of each study area.

Subjects covered will include MEWP regulations and guidance, machine types and use, structural parts, familiarisation and pre-use inspection, safe operating methods and hazards.

Practical

As the assembly and use of MEWPs can be physically demanding, users should be physically fit and in good health and should, generally, not have problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, fear of heights/vertigo, giddiness/difficulty with balance, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness.

The practical training and assessment at one of our IPAF-approved training centres will cover the following:

  • Introduction to the machine and MEWP familiarisation
  • Identification of major components
  • Pre-use checks and inspection
  • Starting / stopping the machine
  • Pre-use function checks
  • Checks prior to road travel
  • Planning the route
  • Travelling the route and manoeuvring the machine
  • Setting the machine for work
  • Basic operation
  • Typical work applications
  • Parking the machine

Those who operate, supervise or manage the use of powered access equipment including scissor lifts (3a) and self-propelled boom lifts (3b).

This e-learning module is ideal for those individuals who do not want time away from their job / workplace.

  • This course is also available as a full-day tutor led IPAF (Dual) Operator course, please click here.

To complete the e-learning theory module, delegates must pass a practice theory test which will verify that the delegate has the required knowledge and is thoroughly prepared to move onto the theory exam and practical training and assessment.

Having passed the randomised 30 question practice test, delegates will be issued with a receipt to verify that they have completed the online training module. Delegates will then need to contact HSS Training to sit their theory exam and undertake practical training and assessment in one of our training centres within 45 days of completing the e-learning module (Due to Covid-19 this has been temporarily increased this to 90 days). This is a half day face to face session with practical training and assessment on both machines.

To find the next available date at a centre near you, please contact us on 0345 605 0006 or email training@hss.com.

All delegates will still be expected to complete a theory test when they arrive at a training centre to verify that they have the knowledge to continue to the practical element of the course. Delegates will be required to bring their e-learning completion receipt with them on the day.

Delegates successfully completing the theory and practical examinations will receive an IPAF Certificate and Powered Access Licence (PAL) Card valid for 5 years.

Information for Employers

HSS Training is an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) with CITB, allowing our customers to claim grants for completing training on our registered courses.  The CITB levy and grants scheme has been introduced to ensure the UK construction industry has the skilled workforce that it needs; providing grants for employers to train their workers. In turn this will allow projects to be completed on time and within budget, in a safe and sustainable manner.

How much is the Grant?

The grant rates are split into three tiers, determined by the duration and content of the course.
