The following topics will be covered:
- All legislation appropriate to conducting lifting activities – Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, LOLER 1998, PUWER and LEEA code of practice
- Planning of a lifting operation including assessing the load, correct equipment selection and assessing the environment
- Safe and correct use of common lifting accessories (slings, shackles, chain slings, wire rope slings, plate clamps, eyebolts, hooks)
- Pre-use inspections of common lifting accessories & equipment
- Assessment of loads incorporating weight, centre of gravity and safety hazards
- Personal safety whilst lifting
- Potential misuse of equipment
- Completing a lifting plan
- The importance of traceability for all lifting equipment
- Completing inspection records
- Inspecting equipment and recording the findings
- Monitoring the continual degradation of items of equipment and assessing the point at which to withdraw items from service
- Processes for quarantining equipment
- Processes for investigating the effects of contaminants and the details required for returning to service
- The requirements and production of an inspection report
- Standards and ratings of lifting equipment
- Maintenance of lifting accessories
- Follow up procedures after an examination

The course is appropriate for delegates who require a background knowledge of lifting operations/equipment and suits those responsible for detailed periodic inspections of lifting equipment.
