This course aims to provide delegates with the skills required to operate an Industrial Counterbalance Lift Truck safely.
It is suitable for operators of all abilities and those who have previously received no formal training or instruction.
The course is delivered through a combination of classroom-based theory and practical hands on training.
Upon successful completion of this course, delegates will be able to:
- Operate plant machinery on all normal tasks for which it is designed
- Name and explain the purpose of principle components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
- Conform with manufacturers requirements as per the operators handbook, and relevant regulations/legislation
- Undertake all pre-use plant checks
- Explain need and function of appropriate documentation
- Configure and ready equipment for travel
- Travel to and manoeuvre in confined spaces (with and without loads)
- Configure and set for lifting and transferring duties
- Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
- Lift and remove various loads using the full working height of the forklift
- Transfer and place loads accurately at given locations
- Place and remove loads from a vehicle
- Maintain safe working situations
- Maintain safe and tidy working areas
- Carry out shut down and securing procedures
- Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting
Duration
Novice delegate – 5 days
Experienced Worker Test – 1 day of testing
This course is suitable for any delegate wishing to gain a NPORS Industrial Counterbalance Lift Truck operations certificate.
Experienced workers, categorised as those with having either 18 months provable work experience and/or 6 months consistent daily experience in the category, will be able to undertake a Experienced Workers Test (EWT). Completion of a EWT will allow experienced workers to take the NPORS Theory and Practical tests required for a NPORS certificate.
Prerequisites
Traditional NPORS card
• Novice – No pre-requisites
• Experienced Workers - either 18 months provable work experience and/or 6 months consistent daily experience in the category.
NPORS / CSCS Card
In addition to the above, delegates must have an in date relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment Touchscreen Test. Failure to attend with this qualification may result in you being denied entry to the course and forfeiture of all fees.
A good understanding of spoken and written English is also required.

Traditional NPORS Card – Refresher training advised every 3 years.
Upon successful completion of this course, delegates applying for the NPORTS / CSCS Card will be awarded an NPORS Red Trained Operators Card valid for 2 years during which time the delegate will need to registered for a relevant NVQ. Upon successfully completing the NVQ, delegates will be awarded a Competent Operators Card valid for 5 years. A CPD record / operator logbook will also be issued which will need to be kept up to date.
