Qualifications and Experience:

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however this course is intended for delegates with some experience of surveying.

The delegate must have a good understanding of spoken and written English. Any problems with literacy or language comprehension should be declared at least 24 hours prior to the course.  This need not preclude attendance to the course, provisions can be arranged provided we can assess the delegates' needs. These will need to be authorised prior to the course by the accreditation.  

Prior to the commencement of the course please also identify any special requirements delegates may have, such as learning difficulties, so that trainer support can be given during the course.

Please arrive at the venue at 08:45 for a 09:00 start. Delegates are to report to the reception area and advise they are attending a Santia Asbestos P402 course.


Minimum contact time: 12 hrs with tutor, plus 4 hrs study time

Each training day concludes at approximately 17:00, please also be aware that you will need to spend time in the evenings working on questions and revising.

After the first day, the start time may change to 08:00, if this is the case this will be discussed on the first day of the course.

On the final day of the course, the exam should conclude before 16:00.


To provide practical skills required to manage asbestos in buildings and a basic knowledge of asbestos removal procedures.

If delivered in-company, space will be required for a decontamination unit and erection of a basic enclosure.

On completion of the course delegates will be asked to complete an evaluation form - we find delegate feedback very useful and welcome your comments as this will enable us to maintain a high level of service and quality.


Delegates are required to pass all of the following parts (A, B and C below) to be awarded the module.

A: Formative Practical Assessment
The formative practical assessment is carried out by the training provider during the course. It enables delegates to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of health and safety issues involved in surveying and bulk sampling of asbestos-containing materials
  • Skills in taking samples of different types of asbestos-containing materials commonly used in buildings (please note: materials that actually contain asbestos are not used in this assessment)

B: Written Theory Examination
This is a closed-book examination of 40 short-answer questions to be completed in two hours. The examination covers sections 1 to 4 of the syllabus and will be overseen by a BOHS invigilator.

C: Written Practical Examination
This is an open-book practical examination covering section 5 of the syllabus with up to 35 questions, illustrated with photographs, to be completed in two hours. Delegates are permitted to access relevant reference material but not electronic databases. Communication between delegates is not permitted. The examination is overseen by a BOHS invigilator.


Delegates who pass all the parts (A, B and C) within 12 months will be awarded a Proficiency Certificate in Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings.

Certificates are issued approximately 4-6 weeks after the course.

Who qualifies for a Grant? 

Employers may be able to claim CITB-ConstructionSkills Grant to offset the cost of employees attending eligible training courses and achieving recognised qualifications. Employers must be in-scope and registered with CITB-ConstructionSkills at the time of training. Full details about Grants can be found on or from the local ConstructionSkills office. If you are eligible to receive a Grant and provide the seven-digit CITB-ConstructionSkills Levy Grant registration number on the course assessment form, CITB will send a claim form to the employer to claim a Grant where applicable. If the registration number is not supplied the Grant will not be paid. Courses may be audited for grant verification purposes.
